California DROP: Delete Your Data From 600+ Brokers Free
California DROP Is Live: Delete Your Data From 600+ Data Brokers for Free
California built a free privacy tool that may make personal information less valuable to the companies that buy and sell access to consumers. As a real estate team in an industry constantly pitched homeowner data, phone numbers and leads, we think that is a very good thing.
You didn't sell your data. You just had a Tuesday in Fresno.
Maybe you live somewhere in central Fresno. You wake up, turn on the television while you get ready and check your phone before leaving.
You get in the car and take Highway 41 north toward the River Park area for work. A podcast or streaming station plays on the way.
You buy lunch. After work, maybe you head toward Old Town Clovis, hit the gym, meet somebody for dinner or pick up groceries.
Eventually you're home. The television comes back on. Your phone comes back out. Maybe you browse houses, cars, sports, vacations or absolutely nothing important.
Nothing about that day sounds unusual.

CTV IntentWhy did I keep telling you where you were?
Central Fresno. Highway 41. River Park. Old Town Clovis.
I wasn't trying to give you directions.
Your location was part of the story.
Where an opted-in device appears, how frequently it appears there and what kind of place it visits can itself become commercially useful information.
And the same idea applies to viewing, purchases, devices, vehicles and online activity.
How many brokers in my own DROP list operate around data like this?
Instead of claiming that dozens of companies "tracked you today," I took a more conservative approach. I looked for minimum examples in my August 2026 DROP broker list whose publicly described businesses clearly overlap with each data category.
Location & visitation
Confirmed examples operating around location, mobility or place-based visitation information.
TV & viewing
Confirmed examples working around connected-TV advertising, viewing or TV measurement.
Purchases & transactions
Confirmed examples operating around purchase, card or retail-transaction intelligence.
Vehicle & automotive
Confirmed examples operating around automotive, vehicle or related consumer information.
Property & homeowner
Confirmed examples operating around property ownership, homeowner or real-estate data.
Advertising & audiences
A deliberately conservative spot-check of the much larger advertising-data ecosystem.
You didn't take a personality test. You didn't download a shady app. You worked, drove, ate lunch, exercised, shopped and watched TV. You lived a Tuesday.
At All Elite Homes, that is the part of modern privacy we think is easiest to underestimate: ordinary life can generate commercially useful information without feeling unusual at all.
This is not your parents' phone book
When I started my own DROP request, I expected California to ask for the digital version of an old phone book: my name, email, ZIP code and phone number.
I did not expect my Mobile Advertising ID, Connected TV ID and vehicle VIN to be part of the conversation.
I am fairly technical, and even I had never spent much time thinking about my television having an advertising identity.
My phone. My television. My car. Those are three places a modern data trail can live.
Mobile Advertising ID
On Samsung, CalPrivacy currently points users through Settings > Google > Security and privacy > More privacy settings > Ads.
On other Android devices, the path commonly runs through Settings > Google > Privacy and security > Ads.
Apple does not currently display the IDFA in the normal iOS interface. CalPrivacy says if "Allow Apps to Request to Track" is turned off, there is no current IDFA to add.
Official MAID instructionsConnected TV ID
CalPrivacy says the location and name vary by television brand. Look in areas such as Support, System Information, About or Device Information.
Look for wording such as Connected TV ID, Unique ID or Device ID.
Streaming players and gaming systems may also have their own identifiers and advertising settings.
Official TV ID instructionsVehicle VIN
Your VIN is the 17-character identifier assigned to your vehicle.
You can usually find it near the windshield, inside the driver-side door jamb, or on your registration, title or insurance documents.
Official VIN instructions"California wants MORE information from me to protect my privacy?"
You choose how much identifying information to provide. The reason to add optional identifiers is matching: one broker might recognize a device or vehicle identifier even when its record is not cleanly connected to your usual email address.
CalPrivacy's technical documentation says DROP provides brokers with standardized, hashed identifiers and does not provide an option to download the raw consumer identifiers.
See how DROP handles identifiersFor our team, the strange-looking MAID, TV ID and VIN fields are actually one of the best teaching moments in DROP because they show how much the definition of personal information has changed.
California got this one right
A data broker is generally a business that gathers and sells consumer information the consumer did not give it directly.
Instead of requiring Californians to identify brokers and submit individual deletion forms one company at a time, DROP centralizes the request.
I submitted my own request before telling you to do it.
I verified my eligibility, created my DROP profile, provided matching information I was comfortable using, reviewed the broker list and submitted the request.
My confirmation also allows me to return later and add new information. CalPrivacy says brokers can take up to 90 days to report initial status and must continue checking for new matching information afterward.
I am deliberately not publishing my private DROP ID.
One of the best details: this is ongoing
The DROP interface states that current and future brokers registering with CalPrivacy are included unless you specifically remove one from your request.
After initial processing, brokers must continue re-checking and deleting new matching information on the required cycle.
What we like about DROP at All Elite Homes is straightforward: California gave the consumer one place to issue the instruction instead of making the consumer chase an industry they may not even know exists.
Wait — THAT industry is in the data-broker ecosystem?
Once I opened the broker list attached to my request, the size of the ecosystem became much more tangible.
Important before reading the names below
Appearing in California's data-broker system does not mean every division or activity of a company operates as a data broker, every record it holds is covered by DROP, or that the company violated the law.
The point is the breadth of the marketplace, not an accusation that every recognizable brand does the same thing.
More than a VIN
Automotive data businesses can operate around ownership, customers, sales, connected vehicles, location or driving-related information depending on the company and dataset.
More than a screen
Advertising and measurement businesses can operate around device identifiers, television viewing, audience segments and cross-screen advertising.
More than a score
Entities connected to names consumers associate with credit, financial data and risk information also appeared in my broker list.
DROP does not simply erase legitimate credit reports. Certain credit and financial activities are governed by separate laws and exemptions.
More than a public record
Real estate has an enormous information marketplace around property ownership, characteristics, homeowner information, prospecting and leads.
More than a doctor's chart
Businesses operating around healthcare information also appear in the ecosystem.
That does not mean HIPAA-protected medical charts can simply be sold. Health-related information, consumer inferences and regulated medical records are not all the same thing.
Or what somebody infers about you
Political-data and analytics companies appear too. That does not mean somebody knows how you cast a secret ballot. It shows that voter, demographic, behavioral and persuasion information can have value.
The VIN question is not theoretical
In May 2026, California announced a $12.75 million settlement involving General Motors over alleged sales of hundreds of thousands of Californians' location and driving data to two data brokers.
That does not mean the challenged conduct continues or that DROP erases every GM record. It does show why vehicle-generated information belongs in a modern privacy conversation.
Read California's GM settlement announcementThe lesson we take from the broker list is not that every familiar company should be treated like a villain. It is that the data economy reaches far more industries than most consumers probably picture when they hear the words "data broker."
Real estate agents are major customers for consumer information
Real estate agents are constantly sold buyer leads, seller leads, homeowner databases, phone numbers, "likely movers," investor prospects, appointments, property intelligence and referral opportunities.
Consumers are being marketed to. Agents are being marketed the consumers.
"Please have an agent call me."
You request a showing, click an ad, ask for a home valuation or intentionally submit a form asking for help.
You know why you provided your information.
"How did you get my number?"
An agent receives your information with a claim that you may buy or sell, but you do not understand why that particular person is suddenly calling.
That is a different beginning to a relationship.
Earlier in my career I worked Zillow Premier Agent opportunities. The people I spoke with generally understood that their action meant they were going to communicate with a real estate agent.
I later experienced a referral funnel where I repeatedly reached consumers who seemed confused about why I had their number. The platform continued checking with me for roughly two years to determine whether any eventually became a transaction because a referral fee could potentially be owed.
I have also personally been pitched lead or referral arrangements where the fee could be around 20% of the agent-side commission if the consumer eventually closed. Terms vary by provider; that is not an industry-wide standard.
And yes, I get the calls too. My number is public because I am a real estate agent, and I still receive solicitations asking whether I want to sell property. Sometimes when I ask who the agent, brokerage or actual source is, the person calling will not tell me.
If someone who works inside real estate has trouble figuring out who is behind a solicitation, the average homeowner should not be expected to untangle the system on their own.
Relationships, not situationships
All Elite Homes runs ads. We use technology. We keep client information because real estate is a long-term relationship business.
But our current website reports that about 78% of our business comes from repeat clients and referrals.
We would rather earn the phone call than buy our way onto the call list.
We want relationships, not real estate situationships created because somebody sold us your phone number.
If you intentionally want to discuss your own property, you can request a Custom Equity Evaluation directly from All Elite Homes . The important distinction is that you decided when the conversation started.
If you're still deciding whether an agent deserves that information, our guide to choosing a Fresno-area Realtor explains the questions we think consumers should ask first.
Across our team, if DROP makes some forms of cold prospecting harder for the real estate industry, we think that is a fair trade for giving Californians more control over themselves.
DROP is powerful. It is not an internet eraser.
A company may keep information you gave it directly
If you became a customer, bought something, created an account or signed up directly, DROP does not automatically require all of that first-party information to disappear.
Your property record does not vanish
Public vehicle, property and voting records are among the types of information that may be exempt from deletion.
Some information has separate protections
Certain medical, credit and financial information is governed by other privacy laws and exemptions.
A broker may not find an exact record
Different brokers hold different identifiers. Adding accurate information later can improve the chances of a match.
DROP is not your only privacy control
California also recognizes qualifying browser opt-out preference signals such as Global Privacy Control. Reviewing advertising and tracking settings on your devices can reduce future collection, while the National Do Not Call Registry addresses a different part of the unwanted-call problem.
None of those tools should be treated as a guarantee that every tracker, broker, marketer or scammer will disappear.
Learn about California opt-out signalsWe think recommending DROP responsibly also means being clear about its boundaries. It can meaningfully reduce a category of brokered data without rewriting every public record or every direct business relationship.
Before paying someone, know what California already gives you for free
DROP is not identical to Incogni or DeleteMe. Commercial services may cover people-search sites, databases and jurisdictions outside the California registered-broker system.
| Feature | California DROP | Incogni Standard | DeleteMe Solo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | $7.99/month equivalent, billed $95.88 annually | $129/year |
| Core reach | 600+ California-registered data brokers | 420+ automated broker sites advertised | 50+ standard broker and people-search sites |
| Ongoing | Required recurring broker processing | Recurring removals while subscribed | Ongoing monitoring and re-removals while subscribed |
| Beyond DROP | California registered-broker system | May reach additional brokers and sites | May reach additional people-search and broker sites |
| Our first step | Use the free state tool first | Consider for broader automation | Consider for broader monitoring |
Verified August 23, 2026. Educational example only. Rates, taxes, and guidelines change frequently. Commercial privacy-service pricing and coverage can also change; verify current offerings directly with each provider.
Californians do not have to choose between DROP and a commercial service. A reasonable approach is to use the free state mechanism first and then decide whether broader automated cleanup is worth paying for.
From our perspective, the free government option deserves to be understood before a Californian assumes a subscription is the only meaningful way to reduce brokered information.
How to submit a California DROP request
I personally went through this process before publishing this guide.
Start at California's official DROP portal
Use the state site rather than relying on a social-media link or third-party signup page.
Verify California residency
Complete the current eligibility process through California's verification system.
Create your profile
Add basic matching information such as your name, date of birth, ZIP code, email addresses or phone numbers.
Consider optional identifiers
You can add Mobile Advertising IDs, Connected TV IDs and VINs if you are comfortable doing so and want to improve matching.
Review and submit
The current interface includes registered brokers and lets you exclude a specific broker if you intentionally want it left out.
Save your private DROP ID
You will use the ID to check status later. Do not publish or casually share it.
Come back when information changes
If you get a new phone number, email address, device or vehicle, you can return and add updated matching information.
The law is established. The website can change.
Verification screens, device instructions, menu names, status wording and administrative procedures may evolve after this guide is published.
For the current process, the California Privacy Protection Agency's own DROP site should control over an old screenshot, third-party article or social post.
Our recommendation is simple: use guides like this to understand the process, but use CalPrivacy itself when it is time to actually submit or update the request.
DROP is progress, not the finish line
Going through DROP left me with one larger question:
Why do consumers often discover how valuable their information is only when they try to get it back?
We have spent years clicking "Accept" on privacy policies that most normal people will never read from beginning to end.
I would like to see California keep moving toward disclosures ordinary people can understand before the information changes hands.
A "Data Facts" label
Show what is collected, where it comes from, why it is needed, how long it is retained and whether it is sold or exchanged.
An annual data statement
Give consumers a simple summary of meaningful sale, sharing or exchange activity involving their information.
More visibility into buyers
Make major recipients, affiliates and repeat commercial buyers easier to identify than a generic phrase such as "trusted partners."
Principles such as purpose limitation, data minimization and transparency deserve to remain part of that conversation.
California built something useful. Use it. Improve it. Do not stop here.
For All Elite Homes, supporting DROP does not require pretending California solved digital privacy. It means recognizing a useful consumer tool and wanting the idea to keep improving.
Questions Californians are likely to ask
These are the questions we think matter most before somebody assumes DROP either fixes everything or does nothing.
Is California DROP really free?
Yes. CalPrivacy says DROP is free for eligible California residents. You do not need to purchase a commercial privacy-removal subscription to submit a DROP request.
Does DROP keep working after I submit?
Yes. After initial processing, covered data brokers must continue checking for new matching information at least every 45 days. DROP is designed as an ongoing request rather than a single deletion event.
Why does DROP ask for my advertising ID, TV ID or VIN?
Those optional identifiers can improve matching. A broker may hold information connected to a device or vehicle identifier even when its record is not cleanly tied to your usual email address or phone number.
Does DROP give my raw information to data brokers?
CalPrivacy's technical documentation says the identifiers brokers download from DROP are hashed. Brokers compare them with standardized, hashed versions of their own records, and DROP does not provide an option to download the raw consumer identifiers.
Will DROP stop cash-offer calls about my house?
It may help reduce some unwanted marketing when qualifying information was supplied through covered data brokers, but it will not necessarily stop every solicitation. Property ownership can exist in public records, and callers may use sources outside DROP.
Does DROP delete my credit report or public property record?
No. DROP does not erase the underlying public property record or simply wipe away legitimate regulated credit-reporting information. Certain information and activities are exempt or governed by separate laws.
Is DROP the same as Incogni or DeleteMe?
No. DROP is California's government mechanism for registered data brokers. Commercial services may cover additional people-search sites, databases or jurisdictions. For California residents, DROP is a strong free first step.
How long does DROP take?
Data brokers began processing requests August 1, 2026 and must access DROP at least every 45 days. CalPrivacy currently says it can take up to 90 days to see initial status reporting, and information added later may require additional processing time.
California built a useful tool. Use it.
Yes, a real estate company is telling you how to make your personal information harder to turn into somebody else's lead.
We understand the irony.
If DROP makes certain forms of cold prospecting harder for our industry, we think giving Californians more control is worth it.
And if the day comes when you actually want to become a real estate lead, we'd love to hear from you.
The difference is that you decided when the conversation started.
